October 2011-Quotes

This has been a busy month for us but somehow I have found time to read a few things.  Here are a few random quotes I jotted down.

From the Message (Eugene Peterson)
I Cor. 13 “Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly.”
I Cor 15  “Ignorance of God is a luxury you can’t afford in times like these.”

From Sacred Marriage: What If God Designed Marriage to Make Us Holy More Than to Make Us Happy by Gary Thomas
p. 29 ” We live in a world where many people are simply too busy or too preoccupied to notice us.  But God delights in us.  We make his supernatural heart skip a beat.”
p. 67 “Contempt is conceived with expectations.  Respect is conceived with expressions of gratitude.  We can choose which one to obsess over-expectations, or thankgivings.”
p. 74 ” A modern writer, Terry Glaspey, sums it up well when he writes, “Prayer is a work to which we must commit ourselves if we are to make sense of our lives in the light of eternity.”

From Ecclesiastes NLT
Ecclesiastes 3:11 “Yet God has made everything beautiful for its time.  He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.”

From Joshua Harris
” Contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want, but the realization of how much you already have. It is not a destination.  It is a state of gratefulness before God.”

From William Morris
“Have nothing in your house that you do not believe to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”

Dear God,  Thank you that you delight in us.  And even though we cannot fully understand the big picture, help us to remember that you love us and know what is best for us.  This week may I commit myself to the work of prayer and focus on gratitude in all things.  In Your Son’s name, Amen
